DDNS

The DDNS (Dynamic Domain Name Service) simplifies the connection to NAS Synology through the Internet by mapping host names to their IP addresses. For example, DDNS allows you to be able to access Synology NAS using a domain name (eg www.john.synology.me), without the need to remember IP addresses (eg 172.16.254.1). 

Prepare the DDNS by directing the host name in the Synology NAS IP address, or registering for a new one provided by Synology or some other DDNS provider. Please consult with each provider for further details on registering host names. Click Test Connection to see if the settings are correct. Click OK to save and complete. 

After the setup is complete, you can access Synology NAS via the Internet by entering the DDNS host name in the web browser. The server requirements and limitations of the DDNS service provider function. Synology NAS can connect to the Internet, DDNS only works in a network environment where no proxy server is needed, it can only enter one hostname for each DDNS provider. 

Managing Hostnames Use the following buttons to manage existing hostname entries: Delete: Deletes the selected hostname entry from the list. Edit: Change the settings for the selected host name entry. Update Now: Update the status of all hostname entries that have DDNS services enabled.

Prepare Customized DDNS Providers

Add a customized DDNS provider if the provider has not yet appeared in the list of service providers. To set up a customized DDNS provider: Click Customize. Then a dialog box appears asking to enter the following settings: Service Provider: Enter the name of the specific service provider. Request URL: Enter the URL of the specific service provider. 

Click Save to add the customized service provider to the list of DDNS service providers. The query URL must comply with the protocol specified by the service provider. This URL is used to update IP information to the provider DDNS server. The query URL generally contains four parameters below. When entering a query URL, please replace the following parameters with the appropriate variable. 

  • Username: __USERNAME__
  • Password: __PASSWORD__
  • Hostname: __HOSTNAME__
  • External address: __MYIP__


The query URL cannot contain spaces or semicolons. To set a DDNS hostname: Click the Add button. A dialog box appears asking to edit the following settings: Service Provider: Select a service provider. To register for a free host name provided by Synology, select Synology from the drop-down menu, click Register Now, and enter details as instructed in DDNS. 

Hostname: Enter the registered DDNS host name, such as john.synology.me. User Name: Enter the username for the DDNS provider. Password: Enter the password for the DDNS provider. External address: Enter the Synology NAS external IP address that will use the host name. Heartbeat: Activate this option to receive alerts about the status of the mapped hostname (only for host names provided by Synology). With DDNS you can simplify the connection to Synology NAS.
