SetupVPN Download technology (virtual private network) allows computers to use public internet connections to join private networks by "tunneling" safely between the machine and the network. This protects data from being seen or damaged by malicious actors. The two most common use cases are consumer VPN services that allow individuals to surf privately from home or to public places, and business-oriented solutions that allow employees to connect securely to corporate networks remotely.

For the most part, connections in VPN are handled by special software such as many consumer VPN services such as OpenVPN or Cisco AnyConnect clients. Another option that is generally supported by most virtual private networks is using Microsoft's default VPN client. This is useful when some VPNs do not provide their own clients or if you want to use the VPN protocol that is not supported by your VPN client like IKEv2.

The disadvantage of using default clients is that you have to choose a specific server to use instead of jumping between different locations the way you can with commercial VPN services. On the other hand, most of the VPNs provided by the company will offer a number of servers that you can contact, which makes this client use ideal.

The above process works for easier VPN connection types like PPTP and L2TP, but if you want to use IKEv2 which requires installing a root certificate from your VPN provider. Note that not every service supports IKEv2, so using this method depends heavily on your service provider or VPN employer. Whatever it is, this is how it works on Windows 10.

If not, there are a number of potential causes that we cannot enter here. Your best bet is checking with your company's IP department or your VPN support service.
