Synology Cloud Station ISCSI the ISCSI stands for Internet Small Computer System Interface, works on the Transport Control Protocol (TCP) and allows SCSI commands to be sent end-to-end via local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WANs)) or the Internet. IBM developed iSCSI as proof of concept in 1998, and presented the first draft of the iSCSI standard to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in 2000. This protocol was ratified in 2003.

iSCSI works by transporting block level data between ISCSI initiators on the server and targets ISCSI on a storage device. The ISCSI protocol encapsulates SCSI commands and assembles data in packets for the TCP / IP layer. Packages are sent over the network using a point-to-point connection. Upon arrival, the iSCSI protocol unpacks the packages, separates the SCSI command so that the operating system (OS) will see storage as a local SCSI device that can be formatted as usual.

 At present, some of the popularity of ISCSI in small to medium businesses (SMB) is related to the way server virtualization utilizes storage storage. In a virtual environment, the storage pool can be accessed by all occupants in the cluster and node cluster nodes communicate with the storage pool through the network through the use of the ISCSI protocol.

An iSCSI initiator is software or hardware installed on a server to send data to and from ISCSI-based storage arrays or iSCSI targets. Because using standard Ethernet, ISCSI does not require expensive and sometimes complicated switches and cards needed to run Fiber Channel (FC) networks. That makes it cheaper to adopt and more manageable. A storage area network FC (SAN) transmits data without dropping packets and traditionally supports higher bandwidth, but FC technology is expensive and requires a special skill base to properly install and configure.

An ISCSI SAN, on the other hand, can be implemented with an ordinary Ethernet network interface card (NIC) and switch and run on an existing network. Instead of learning, building and managing two networks - LAN Ethernet for user communications and FC SANs for storage - organizations can use their existing knowledge and infrastructure for both LANs and SANs in Synology Cloud Station ISCSI.

Due to concerns about performance and compatibility with other storage networks, ISCSI SAN took several years to become the main alternative for Fiber Channel. EqualLogic Corp start-up vendors and LeftHand Networks Inc. finally achieving considerable success with their ISCSI storage series purchased by larger vendors. In 2008, Dell Inc. EqualLogic costs $ 1.4 billion and Hewlett-Packard Co pay $ 360 million for LeftHand.

Fiber Channel remains a more popular storage protocol than ISCSI, but all major storage vendors now have an ISCSI SAN array, including a storage platform that supports FC and ISCSI. Systems running FC and ISCSI are known as integrated or multiprotocol storage, and they often run systems that are connected to the network for files.
